In my opinion the use of the hookah in the story was more or less a metaphor. In the late 1800s the use (and perception of) opium was much different than that today, and therefore I think it was a metaphor for the dreamlike hallucinogenic events happening to her. It was as though it was meant to be an explanation for the events shifting and changing in such an erratic way. Not in the meaning of that Friday, September 21, 2007

Thomas,
I enjoy reading your responses. I cringe at the constant references to drugs, but you make some convincing arguments. If this story is really nothing but the rantings of an author high on some drug or another, do you think it is a suitable work of literature for discussion in a high school classroom?
By the way, I can tell you are taking more time with the posts. There are fewer misspellings. I also like the way you are stretching your sentences into more complex forms using your already extensive vocabulary.
lol yes i think it is, however at the same time my perception of acceptable behaviors diffrent than most. i have been taking some more time, but its hard to answer allot of your questions in the small amount of time allotted in this class.
