The Cheshire Cat told Alice that Wonderland was for mad people and then he gave an example that when a dog is mad he growls and when he is happy he wags his tail, so he smiles because he is the opposite of a dog when he is mad he wag his tail like he’s happy and when he’s happy he growls. The baby is a pig because he is a bad baby so he was turned into a pig. Alice eats the mushroom because the caterpillar tells her that one side will make her bigger and one side will make her smaller, and she wants get bigger so she eats the mushroom. Alice would drink from a bottle that says drink me because she is just like everyone else, she is curious.
Alice eats the mushroom because the caterpillar says that one side of the mushroom makes you grow taller and the other makes you grow smaller and she need to grow smaller to fit into the little house. Alice says she is not herself because all day she has not been her normal size and she feels weird. Alice would drink from the bottle that says “drink me” because she wants to grow smaller to fit in the door that leads to the garden. The Cheshire cat is always grinning because he tells Alice that Wonderland is for mad people, so when the cat is mad he is smiling and when he is happy he growls.
In my opinion there is a foreshadowing going on. I think later on in the story Alice will meat someone that wont stand for Alice temper such as the queen. This is also why Alice needs to find out who she is. She doesn’t know who she is because keeps changing form but she doesn’t realize that just because you keep changing form don’t mean your mind changes. Such as what you think, believe in, and thoughts are. This is why she eats the mushroom so she can try to get back to her normal form.

This story is kind of old and is based back in the medieval days. Just that the characters are animals and things. So back in those days wise people with lots of wisdom or wizards would smoke like that. So I think that the caterpillar is representing a wise person that is giving knowledge to Alice.

In my opinion the use of the hookah in the story was more or less a metaphor. In the late 1800s the use (and perception of) opium was much different than that today, and therefore I think it was a metaphor for the dreamlike hallucinogenic events happening to her. It was as though it was meant to be an explanation for the events shifting and changing in such an erratic way. Not in the meaning of that Alice was on opium, but that the reality she was experiencing was something of a resemblance to her mind being clouded and confused by narcotics. Another event I believe to be a drug reference was the eating of the mushroom. In my opinion this was a metaphor to the idealism that further distortion of reality could perhaps bring true reality further into perspective. This ideal stemmed originally from the drinking of the “drink me” bottle, where Alice realized that the reality (or perception there of) she was living could be changed from products that she ingested.
I think that there is a hookah in a children’s story because they are trying to get a point across that smoking is not for children. Awe, a good question, what is a hatter? A hatter is a man or woman that makes felt hats or just regular hats, the reason they call some of them “mad” is because the mercury that is in the felt gets inhaled by hatters and they become crazy. Yes, the cat does help Alice, she helps Alice get through her dream. “Drink Me”, Why would Alice drink from a bottle that says that? Well because of the simple fact it does tell her what to do, so why not drink from a bottle that says “Drink Me.

response

Alice keeps drinking the bottles that say,"drink me" because she is always so curious.she also wants everything to get back to normal. Alice wants to eat the mushroom because she wants to get back to her normal size .The cook is throwing things because she is mad, before everyone laeves she just throws a plate. Hatters are just the people that make hats.
I think the reason that Alice says she is not her self is cause she has changed so many times in one day that she does not know who or what she really is. Also there was the cook that kept on throwing things the reason was the little baby liked the sound of the pans flying bye. Alice finds a mushroom that could make her grow taller and shorter all on which side of it she eats so she eats some of the mushroom to get taller. I think the reason that Alice would drink from a bottle that says drink me is she expecting it to do something good for her. All the things that she used before help her get taller and or shorter. This is why i think she drinks something that says drink me.
Well this story is a little more than what I call odd. Alice says she is not herself because there were some weird things going on around her; her entire perception of reality was changing. She’s a little girl on an adventure in search of something; she’s just not quite sure what she is searching for. She eats the mushroom so she can get taller but then she got to tall and ate some more to get shorter. She drank from the bottle that says “Drink me” because it said drink me and it’s a weird world that she’s living in and it can make her taller or shorter. Why did the cook throw things? I think that she threw things because she was mad.

The reason Alice eats the mushroom is to accomplish her goal of growing taller. but on the latter Alice drinks from the bottle that says "drink me" is that she trusts the note after checking the label for poison and yet if she wouldn't drank from the bottle she would of never had to eat the mushroom. While talking to the caterpillar he asks who she is. Alice says that she is not herself is because she doesn't know everything that she had known previously to following the rabbit. In the book Alice decides that since the child was an awful baby that she thought it made a rather handsome pig so the baby was a pig.

There is some foreshadowing going on when the caterpillar tells Alice to "keep her temper". Perhaps later on in the story Alice will get tired of all the madness and she will freak out on someone or something. Also she may get trapped and lose her temper at a time for which only a level head will get her through, ultimately teaching her a lesson. The Cheshire Cat is always grinning because he is a Cheshire Cat. "They" being Lewis Carroll, put a hookah in the story because in children's stories, this content is not harmful. Kids do not know what a hookah is about and they really cannot learn from this book what it is for. Alice eats the mushroom because she wants to be the right size to enter the house of the Duchess.

There could be drugs in the hookah. There could be lemonade in the hookah. The thing is, there was no mention of what exactly is in the hookah and people can only make a guess. The way people look at this subject greatly determines where their minds are whether it is good or bad.
The reason that Alice drank from a bottle that says drink me is because she is so gullible and naive that she will do even what a bottle tells her.
The reason the cat is always smiling is because he knows what kind of trap the Alice is going into and he is helping lead her in the trap.
The cat does not really help her but it because of him that she is moving.
The reason the cook is throwing things is because he is looking for his friends unhappy birthday present to give to him.

A Hookah, a Duchess, & a Cheshire Cat

I have located a nice little web site that does a nice job summarizing the chapters. You are free to use it to gain some insight. I believe it will help answer a lot of your questions. I also believe it addresses the questions you all have about the hookah and what is in it. Let's be adult about our conversations in here. Those who cannot behave in an adult fashion will lose blogging privileges and the accompanying grades.

Today you will select four questions to answer. You may answer more than that but you must answer at least four of the following questions:
  1. Is there some foreshadowing going on when the Caterpillar tells Alice to keep her temper? Explain your answer.
  2. Why does Alice recite the poem to the Caterpillar? Why are all of the characters "mad"?
  3. Why does Alice say she is not herself?
  4. Why is the Cheshire cat always grinning?
  5. Why is the cook throwing things?
  6. Why is the baby a pig?
  7. Why do they have a hookah in a children's story?
  8. What are hatters?
  9. Does the Cheshire cat help Alice? How?
  10. Why does Alice eat the mushroom?
  11. Why would Alice drink from a bottle that says "Drink Me"?

The link to the chapter summaries is posted on the link section of the blog.
Your posts are due today! Don't forget to comment.

Let's Turn This Place into Wonderland!

We need some color here in the restaurant. At the suggestion of one of my MSU colleages, we will be adding pictures to our posts. Today, you will be figuring out how to edit your posts. I want you to go back to your last post and do the following:
  1. Delete your title. Do not create another one.
  2. Add a picture with an AAIW theme.
  3. Align your picture at the top of your post on the right or left side. Do not center align it.
  4. Select medium or small for image size.
  5. Since some of you will get this done rather quickly, and we are short of computing space (only for the next few days!), I need you allow someone to use your computer as soon as you are done. Please help others who have not figured it out. Do not do it for them. Talk them through the process.

Feel free to add pictures anytime!

If anyone has any ideas on how we can make our restaurant look better, let me know. I am always open to suggestions.

The first verse of the poem on page nine means that he is excited to shine each little part of his tail. Alice follows the rabbit because she is curious as to where the rabbit is going. She wants to see where it will lead her to and what she might find when it gets to where its going. It is shaped the way it is to show you in a little more detail of how the mouse is talking. How he was pausing and taking breaths a lot. He couldn't tell the story without running out of breath every other word. There is no winner or loser, no start or finish line in this race. It is just a simple race for fun.

The first verse of the poem on page 9 means that the crocodile is taking a bath, because he needs to, to shine his tail. Alice follows the rabbit because she is very curious about the rabbit because she has never seen a rabbit with a waistcoat-pocket or a watch to pull out of it. The story on page 17 that the mouse is telling is shaped in a mouse tail because he is talking about his family and him self. The Caucus-race that they are playing is different from a regular race because everybody wins and they all get prizes.

Whats up?

why does everyone agree with each other? Does no one have a diiferent opinion?

The first verse of the poem on page 9 means that the crocodile is taking a bath, because he really needs one. Alice follows the rabbit because she is very curious, because she has never seen a rabbit that carried a pocket watch. The story on page 17 is written like it is because it is a metaphor for a tale tail. The caucus race is different from a regular race because they can start and stop whenever they want, and everyone pretty much wins!
Where ' is my female cat!
My opines on the poem well the first part of the verse is. That the writer is trying to tell everyone that don’t believe everything you here or see. Some time things look nice and sound good but can quickly turn around and hurt you. I think she follows the rabbit because she has too much curiosity and really has no other option but to just set there. For two reasons one the mouse is tailing a tell at the same time Alice is looking at the mousse tail. So the writer just combined the things to make the story even more weird. In a caucus-race everybody starts when they want to and they finish when they want to. In a regular race they start at the same time and they win by being the first one across the line.

The little crocodile wants his tale to be even shinier than what it already is. The little crocodile thinks that he can do this by pouring the water of the Nile on to every golden scale. Alice follows the rabbit because she wants to know what other weird things could possible go on and the fact that she is a little girl doesn’t help her curiosity. The story the mouse tells is shaped like a mouse tail because as he is telling the story Alice is watching his tail. In a caucus-race there isn’t a start or a finish, and there are no winners or losers like in a regular race.
The first verse in the book on page 9 pretty much says that she is describing the crocodile as a gentle creature while towards the end she politely reveals the croc as they really are. The reason that Alice follows the white rabbit is because she is rather curious on when rabbits started wearing waist coats and carrying pocket watches. She wanted to see what this rabbit was up to. There was really no winner the purpose was to get dry.

Ou' est ma chatte! in translation mans where is my female cat.the first verse on page 9 is just pretty much stating the description of the crocodile as being a gentle creature to what they really are. I believe that Alice follows the rabbit because the rabbit is unusual because of the coat and the pocket watch so she wants to see what is the deal with the rabbit. I'm sure the story told was shaped in that form because it is like a mouse tail like the person telling the story. Alice was watching his tail while he was telling the story.I don't know how the caucus race is different tha the other race.
The french word means Where is my female cat. The first verse of the poem on page 9 means that the crocodile is taking a bath. Alice follows the rabbit because she is curious little girl looking for answers. The story the mouse tells is shaped like it because it is a metaphor. A tail for a tale. The caucus-race was different from a a regular race because everybody won and started whenever they wanted. On a regular race only one person wins and you all start the race together. The race showed how much different wonderland was.

The French words mean that she wants to know where her cat is. Which bothers the mouse due to his phobia of cats and dogs. And for the second question my opinion for the story essentially stands as ramblings of an intoxicated author, but if you want to pick it apart I suppose you could come to a judgment that the author intended for the poem, along with the previous ramblings of her to be a metaphor for a child’s attempt to mentally recite things that they have learned in previous times. From when she’s attempting to recite the capitols of states to attempting to recite stories and poems. It reminded me of a young child trying to show off their knowledge that was actually miniscule in reality and glorified in her mind and telling. In my opinion the poem is a signature of immature child’s play

now to point out my thoughts of the story adding up to the ramblings of an intoxicated author. To me the story essentially adds up to a fantastical dramatization of hallucinations, and furthermore a victim of over reading and attempts to draw more meaning than is necessarily intended. but for all intensive purposes meaning can be derived, in the same way that meaning could be falsely derived from the shaping of veins on an oak leaf. however i suppose i could be mistaken, and without knowing the rest of the story i cant really make a definite opinion.

The first verse on the poem on page 9 means how does the crocodile do as good as he does. In other words how can people do as well as they do. In my opinion, Alice follows the rabbit out of curiosity; I believe that it was put in the book for the simple reason of catching the attention of young listeners. In my opinion, the story that the mouse tells is shaped like that because the author chose to be creative with his work. In a regular race there is a start, finish, and a winner. In a caucus race they start whenever they want, they stop when they want, and they argue a lot about who wins.

The French word Ou' est ma chatte! means where is my female cat! The poem is nonsense she is thinking of stuff that might help her, but if i had to guess. The little crocodile has nasty stuff on is tale so he wants to go to the cleanest place to wash his tale. Alice is lost and would follow a rabbit or even a monkey. The story that the mouse was telling was shaped like a rats tale. Caucus-race is way different from a regular race a regular race has a start and finish. A caucus-race starts when you feel like it, and ends when you stop or someone stops the race. Then they decide who the winner is..... Everyone.

I think that the first verse of the poem means, how does a little kid keep so innocent in such a rough world. Also I think she follows that rabbit cause she was bored and she has never seen a rabbit that could talk and carry a watch in it little pocket. In the story I think that the words are shaped like a tail to symboliz a mouses tail for the sentance before stating that she is going to explain what the mouses tali looks like. The diffrence between a caucus race is there is no start and no finish and there is no winner. In a normal race there is a winner and you have a start and a finish line.
I think that the fisrt verse means nothing. I may be taking the story to literal but i think that she's just reciting or trying to recite a poem that she was taught. I think that she followed the rabbit b/c it's what led here down the hole. The rabbit is essentially the reason that Alice is in wonderland in the first place. I don't know I'd follow the rabbit. It's the shape of the mouse's tail and Alice is watching the tail as she listens to the tale. The Caucus-race is different from a regular race b/c there is no loser and everyone is a winner. Doesn't a 'real' Caucus-race deal with politics though?
The first line in the poem on page nine talks about the crocodile polishing his tale in the nile river the reason it has to in the nile is because of the gold. The reason Alice follows the rabbit is because she wants to know why he is late , and she is very naive in her choices. The reason the story is shaped like that is because the mouse is telling a tale and that is why it is shaped like a "tail". The difference between a normal race and a caucus race is that in a caucus race the is no winner or loser and there is no start of finish and everybody gets prizes.
The first line of the poem on page nine talks about a crocodile finishing shining his tale by going over each individual scale. The reason that Alice follows the rabbit is because she is young and naive. I the reason that the story the mouse was telling was shaped like that is because the author has a sense of humor and likes to make the readers strain their eyes. The race the dodo organizes is much different than normal races because there is no organized start or an organized finish so there cant be a winner.

The title of Mr. N's latest blog is translated, "Where 'is my female cat?" The first verse of the poem on page nine may be seen as a parable about someone (the crocodile) who questions about how to make his/herself a better person. The Nile may be seen as a peace of mind brought to the toil in one's life (the golden scales) as it washes away the negativity. As for the rabbit, he is followed by Alice because she would like to talk to someone who may be able to give her the whereabouts of the strange world she has ended up in. On page seventeen the mouse told a story that was printed quite weird. A good reason for this may be to add emphasis that the mouse may have had a squeaky voice and told the story in one breath. Also, the text gets gradually smaller to show the steady loss of the one breath in which the story is being told. Finally, the Caucus race is different from normal races for the following reasons: there is no countdown to the start of the race, the contestants ran when they felt like it; the course was a not-so-well defined shape similar only somewhat to a circle, as long as it was close enough; everybody wins and gets a prize. I have never heard of such a race as this one but it sounds fun.

The first verse of the poem on page 9 talks about a crocodile putting final touches on his shining tail. It means that he is excitingly touching up each individual scale on his tail. Alice follows the rabbit because she is a young, curious and adventurous little girl. She keeps going after the rabbit more and more in hopes of something even weirder or more exciting to happen to her. The tale that the mouse tells on page 17 is shaped the way it is to show how he after every couple of words is out of breath or pauses and it slowly winds down in volume and comes to nothing. The caucus race that the dodo mentioned would help them dry off is very different from a regular race for in the caucus race there is no starting line, finish line, or no winner or loser.

Ou' est ma chatte!

Now that you have been through the Pool of Tears , attended a caucus race, and listened to a long tale, it is time to answer a couple of your questions. However, as you know, I will not answer them for you. You need to get into your groups and come up with your answers collaboratively. This assignment, like the last, is worth thirty points.

Be sure to write at least one paragraph with proper spelling , grammatical structure, and punctuation. It is important to note that there may or may not be a single definitive answer to each question. Some questions require you to make inferences from which you can only make educated replies.

  1. I want you to look up the translation to the title of this post and post it as the title to your groups' post. Click on this post's title to link to a translator
  2. What does the first verse of the poem on page 9 mean? Notice the verse ends with an exclamation mark.
  3. Why does Alice follow the rabbit? This question was asked the most often.
  4. Why is the story the mouse tells on page 17 shaped like it is?
  5. How is the caucus-race different from a regular race?

You need to have your responses posted by the end of class today.
