I think that the fisrt verse means nothing. I may be taking the story to literal but i think that she's just reciting or trying to recite a poem that she was taught. I think that she followed the rabbit b/c it's what led here down the hole. The rabbit is essentially the reason that Alice is in wonderland in the first place. I don't know I'd follow the rabbit. It's the shape of the mouse's tail and Alice is watching the tail as she listens to the tale. The Caucus-race is different from a regular race b/c there is no loser and everyone is a winner. Doesn't a 'real' Caucus-race deal with politics though?
