Alice says to the caterpillar that she is not herself because she keeps changing sizes with every bite she takes from the mushroom, whether it be taller or shorter. They have a hookah in a childrens story because it fits with everything that goes on in the story and 9 out of 10 children will not even know what a hookah is or what it is used for. Alice eats the mushroom because she needed to change her size back to normal or shorter rather than being extremely tall. Alice would drink from a bottle that says "drink me" because she is curious and since it wasn't poison she thought it would be fun and adventureous.

Well, I have been around the block a few times and didn't know what a hookah was until you students told me.
