The first verse of the poem on page nine means that he is excited to shine each little part of his tail. Alice follows the rabbit because she is curious as to where the rabbit is going. She wants to see where it will lead her to and what she might find when it gets to where its going. It is shaped the way it is to show you in a little more detail of how the mouse is talking. How he was pausing and taking breaths a lot. He couldn't tell the story without running out of breath every other word. There is no winner or loser, no start or finish line in this race. It is just a simple race for fun.
